From rice husk ash to wall-building innovation

Thanakorn Prisawong
Materials Scientist / Developer of EKOBLOK
EKOBLOK is a Thai building materials innovation, under Ekoconcrete Co., Ltd., born from over two decades of material research and an unwavering belief that what the world discards can be transformed into something of lasting value.
EKOBLOK was developed by Thanakorn Prisawong, a Bangkok-based materials scientist who has spent his entire career asking one question: what should the walls we live behind be made of? His search led him through tons of unconventional materials — paper fiber, rice straw, coconut shell, sawdust — always chasing the ideal balance of thermal comfort, acoustic performance, structural strength, and ease of use.
The breakthrough came quietly, through a problem no one wanted: tons of rice husk ash deemed worthless, piling up with nowhere to go. What began as an experiment became a discovery. By carefully incorporating rice husk ash into a proprietary lightweight concrete mix design, Thanakorn created a masonry block that was not only significantly lighter than conventional alternatives, but also thermally insulating, acoustically effective, and easy to drill and fasten — properties since verified by leading Thai testing institutions and protected under patent.
Based on the conviction that every material has its own strength, EKOBLOK continues to refine and develop, with new mix designs in ongoing research to better serve modern living. Each block carries upcycled agricultural and industrial by-products that would otherwise go to waste — converting them into a material that lightens structural load, reduces energy consumption, and brings us closer to the low-carbon future the world needs.
